Where HDMI wins

Every TV uses HDMI. AV receivers, soundbars and streaming devices all use HDMI. If you are connecting a PC or console to a TV, HDMI is the right port. HDMI also carries audio on the same cable, which matters for home theatre setups.

Where DisplayPort wins

DisplayPort 1.4 carries 4K at 144Hz. DisplayPort 2.1 carries 4K at 240Hz and 8K at 60Hz. For high-refresh PC gaming monitors, DisplayPort usually gives you more headroom than HDMI. DisplayPort also supports multi-monitor daisy-chaining (MST) without a hub.

Adapters between the two

Connecting a DisplayPort source to an HDMI display works passively. The other direction - HDMI source to DisplayPort display - needs an active adapter because HDMI does not carry the DisplayPort signal natively. The Cable Finder picks up on this and shows you the right adapter.
